Lincoln's Inn Fields Petition - Step One

Petition in support of those opposing Camden Council's proposal to let out parts of Lincoln's Inn Fields regularly for large private events.

The London Local Authorities Bill is currently being debated in the House of Lords. A provision in Clause 112 proposes to allow the Council of the London Borough of Camden to erect temporary structures on restricted areas of Lincoln's Inn Fields and use them for the purposes of private events. These events would be allowed to take place in an area covering approximately one fifth of Lincoln's Inn Fields until 1am on 84 days each year.

Since 1894, the tranquility of Lincoln's Inn Fields has been preserved by an Act of Parliament that prohibits any building, marquee or tent. Camden Council proposes that this protection is repealed.

Local residents, students, workers and tourists in their thousands use the space as a haven of calm in the middle of London. When Camden Council illegally allowed events to be held there on occasions in the past, this calm was interrupted across a wide area - and not just during each event, but for days on either side with preparations and subsequent dismantling.

The Covent Garden Community Association, as well as the Society for Open Spaces, Sir John's Soane's Museum, the Royal College of Surgeons and the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn, has formally objected in Parliament to this provision being allowed in the Bill.
